History of Carver Chairs
19 Oct 2023
There are two competing ideas on the origins of carver chairs. The first theory is intimately identified with John Carver, the illustrious governor and founder of Massachusetts' Plymouth colony. Carver, who was instrumental in the formulation and signing of the Mayflower Compact, the Plymouth colony's first governing document, is thought to have owned and possibly commissioned the manufacture of a chair of this design. It's worth remembering that the Mayflower, the ship that brought John Carver and his fellow settlers to the new colony, was named after him.
The second version is that the carver chair got its name from the person in charge of the home, who was usually the father.
