Victoria Cross Trust launches Café with support of Cafe Furniture Donation from Pub Stuff

A national charity dedicated to restoring the graves of every Victoria Cross recipient has received a substantial donation of dining tables and comfy cafe chairs from leading hospitality furniture provider Pub Stuff to furnish its new museum café.

The Victoria Cross Trust charitable organisation, which is based at Ashworth Barracks, in Balby, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, preserves and upkeeps every one of more than 1,300 graves of the servicemen across all services who were awarded the highest military accolade for their bravery.

As part of its fundraising efforts, the Trust launched a military museum with a significant number of donated artefacts. Now it is hoping to boost its coffers further with the opening of a café on site, which is open to museum visitors and the general public.

Cafe Furniture Donation from Pub Stuff

And thanks to the generosity of Pub Stuff Ltd, the leading contract furniture provider to the hospitality and leisure trade, cafe visitors can enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of tea in comfort after it donated a selection of cafe furniture including cafe chairs and restaurant tables worth £3,000.

“As well as providing a service to museum visitors, our goal is to engage different groups in the surrounding community in using the café as a meeting point and introducing opportunities to support the charity,” said Gary Stapleton, Chairman of the Victoria Cross Trust.

Dawn Catley, a volunteer at the Victoria Cross Trust Cafe wrote to Pub Stuff Ltd after hearing about Pub Stuff's Community Stuff furniture grant scheme.

“We knew we needed to make the cafe appealing. Having achieved a five-star environmental health rating for the kitchen, which was entirely donated, when we saw that Pub Stuff were offering a furniture grant to community groups, we felt that our café met the criteria. We never expected that we would receive 100% of what we asked for though and we are totally bowled over.  Our elderly visitors in particular are delighted that the chairs are comfortable, sturdy and not too low. Everyone is so grateful - the cafe furniture is the only new thing we have!”

Cafe Tables and Restaurant Chairs for The Victoria Cross Trust Cafe

Sally Huband, Director, Pub Stuff Ltd, had no hesitation in responding positively to the application from the Trust and in keeping with its nature, the cafe dining chairs were provided in patriot Union Flag contract fabrics together with a selection of Pub Stuff New Highland Grey and Highland Blue contract fabrics.

“Pub Stuff is proud to support Gary, Dawn and the team at the Victoria Cross Trust in the humbling work they do to honour the incredibly brave servicemen who have often made the ultimate sacrifice during active service,” said Sally.

“We reviewed the application from the Victoria Cross Trust against the criteria of the scheme and were incredibly moved by the aims of the charity.  They do exceptional work in creating a link between the charity, the local community and the military and we are only too pleased to do our small bit in helping the Victoria Cross Trust to achieve its goals.”

As well as working within the leisure and hospitality industry, Pub Stuff is often called upon to help to design and furnish sports clubs, club houses and social areas for the military which also includes the Officers and Sergeants Mess, the Naffi and MOD social restaurants, cafes and bars.

The Victoria Cross was introduced by Queen Victoria in 1856 and uniquely rewarded both Officers and other ranks.  Since then, 1,358 awards have been made – with only 15 awarded since the Second World War.  There are only 10 living recipients of this award.
